Natural Solutions to Combating Cold & Flu Season



So your head feels like it’s about to explode because it’s throbbing so dang hard, it seems as though your nose has a mind of its own and is acting like a faucet that doesn’t have an “off” setting, and you can barely talk because your throat feels as though its completely closed shut.  Well, I’m sure you’ve all heard the old saying, “Drink plenty of fluids and get ample amounts of rest.”  Yes I know, it can (and usually does) get real old, real fast.  Turns out though, there is a bit of truth to the above statement, and there are ways to combat the common cold and even more ferocious flu the all-natural way, no flu shot required!

A)     Immunity-boosting supplements:

  • Vitamin C – Studies have shown that 1,000-2,000mg/day (higher than the RDA) may somehow shorten the length of the cold, while also making it more mild.
  • Echinacea – At the onset of the cold, research how shown that 3-4ml in a liquid preparation or 300mg of a powdered form in capsule/tablet  taken every two hours for the first day of illness, then 3x/day for a total of 7-10 days, can decrease the duration of the cold. 
  • Zinc Lozenges – Lozenges containing 13-25mg, every 2 hours, have been found to be effective in slowing the cold virus and shortening ill symptoms.

B)      Sleep & Hydration: These two extremely important no matter what symptoms you are or aren’t experiencing – now is the time to clock more hours!  Also, keeping hydrated and replacing fluids that are potentially lost through fever and runny noses is equally important. 

C)      Humidity: Mucosal membranes act as a barrier and work most effectively when kept moist and taken care of.

  • Using a nasal mist or “neti pot”
  • Humidifier
  • Warming hands and face over your hot cup of tea is a simply brilliant idea!
