The Abdominal Training Myths

Many people desire those “6-pack” abs. But how do you get them?

1) Only perform exercises that isolate the abs (spot-reduction), and/or

2) Train the abs differently than other muscles in the body (“toning”).

What do you think?

There is no quick-fix and spot-reduction doesn’t work! We lose body fat from all over the body based on genetics, not on what exercises we perform. And you should not train your abs differently in order to “tone” them. “Toning” a muscle also does not work. A muscle either decreases or increases in size.

Here is what needs to happen (for any muscle group in the body) to be leaner and decrease overall body fat:

  • Proper nutrition
  • Cardiovascular activity
  • Strength training
    • Use a variety of exercises for the muscle group
    • Use movement in multiple planes of motion to train that muscle group
    • Example for training your abs: sit ups, hanging leg raises, cable twists
